THE GIG TOG

Stuart Cable
19th May 1970 - 7th June 2010
The Stereophonics/Killing For Company
I only met Stuart the once - he played The Citrus Club in Edinburgh with his new band Killing For Company in a hastily arranged affair. He was a lovely genuine guy who bought the beers as we sat at the bar before & after the gig. "Mark my words" he said, "I'll be making the news sooner rather than later". How true that was but, unfortunately, for the wrong reasons. Sadly missed.

Ari Up
17th January 1962 - 20th October 2010
The Slits/New Age Steppers
Ari was a free spirit in every sense of the phrase. I found her to be a total chatterbox with a quirky sense of humour. She thought my first name was a nickname & wanted proof that it was real, which I duly proved, & that made her laugh out loud! I then asked for her to prove her "Up" surname which also brought out the laughter! Gone too soon.

Cory Smoot (AKA Flattus Maximus)
25th August 1977 - 3rd November 2011
GWAR
Cory seemed fascinated in UK food, particularly the traditional Fish & Chips aspect of it. We sat in The Blue Lagoon chippy opposite the ABC in Glasgow talking about the Pro's & Cons of "kick ass, hellishly hot, greasy shit" with him being more for it than me! He even joked about the heart condition that would eventually kill him.

Jo Dunne
12th November 1968 - 26th October 2012
Fuzzbox
Jo was, initially, the quiet one when I met Fuzzbox at King Tuts in Glasgow. The other members referred to her as "the musical genius" of the band but quiet as a mouse. This seemed at odds with the aftershow banter we had with me & Jo in particular coming out with a stream of jokes aimed at Drummers & Bass players. An extra star in the sky since her passing.

Mikie Jacobs
1st February 1964 - 17th November 2013
Gin Goblins
Mikie was a good guy, plain & simple. Passionate, talented, committed & genuine. A friend of mine that will be missed, not just by me of course, by everyone who he had touched with his music, personality & passion. I'm incredibly saddened by his passing and hope he has now found the peace he craved.

Dave Brockie
30th August 1963 – 23rd March 2014
GWAR.
Another member of GWAR that I spent some time with in a Glasgow chippy. Although not as talkative as Cory Smoot, Dave's sense of humour was obvious to anyone within earshot. R.I.P.

Vale Valentine
The Valentines
Vale was not only beautiful but was so vivacious, funny, caring and talented as well. She will be missed by many, eclipsed by none, R.I.P.

Colin McQuillan
24th May 1968 - 18th August 2014
Runnin' Riot
A genuine, warm, funny, friendly bloke & general all round good guy. Will be missed by many, R.I.P.

Steve Strange
28th May 1959 - 12th February 2015
Visage
When I met Steve he was seemingly on the road to recovery from his demons but this particular night he seemed to have slipped a little (a lot) and was very confused. He was happy enough though and seemed to enjoy the night. Gone too young.

BB King
16th September 1925 - 14th May 2015

When it comes to legends BB King was the Daddy of them all when it comes to guitarists. I was lucky to have met him, very briefly, in 2011 and he was a lovely man. The thrill has gone.

Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister

Legend.

Dickie Hammond
(d.2015)
Leatherface, Angelic Upstarts & many more

Always a character, fantastic musician, sense of humour that get everone into trouble. I will miss him. A very sad loss to all.

Tony Van Frater
(d.2015)
Red Alert, Angelic Upstarts, Cockney Rejects

I met Tony only a few times but he left a big impression on me as he did with all who knew him. A shock to have lost him.

Rick Parfitt
12th October 1948 - 24th December 2016
Status Quo

Very sad to say that another friend of mine joins the best band in metaphorical heaven. I have quite a few anecdotes involving Rick but shall keep them off this tribute. Rick was an absolutely blinding fella - funny, talented, caring and much, much more. "A legend in his own lunchbox" he would say. He will be missed by many. R.I.P. mate, time for a marguerita?
