What’s your real first name?

Fishbones IS my real first name. Some people find that hard to accept but that’s their problem, not mine.

Can I be your assistant & tag along at gigs to learn to be a concert photographer?

Sorry, no. Passes are hard enough to get without having to ask for two. This job is pretty much a “one man band” affair.

Can you send me some pictures for use on my Facebook/website or for my magazine/book project?

If you’re willing to pay the fair going rate, yes, no problem. If you want them for free ask someone who was in the crowd & took photos with their phone.

Can you get me a free ticket, backstage or free merchandise?

How do you get passes to take photos at gigs and can anyone do it?

Firstly, you have to be accredited by someone – that could be the band themselves or their management/press agent/record label etc. Having your own website helps to show off what you’re capable of (this is a better way to show off your work rather than Facebook for example). If you have a good portfolio behind you then there’s no reason not to try. Bear in mind that whoever sanctions a pass for you is looking for good quality work so, if you’re new to this you’re better off starting in small clubs with small or local bands to hone your skills before trying for the bigger venues and big name bands as the rejection that is part & parcel of gig photography could destroy your enthusiasm.

What camera equipment do you use?

1 x Canon 5D mkIII, 1 x Canon 5D mkI, Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L IS, Canon 50mm f1.8 & occasionally a Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS

You seem to have been to thousands of gigs and photographed them all! What was your favourite gig?

That's impossible to answer as gigs can be memorable for many different reasons.

Hey there! You have shots of my band, do you mind if we use them/can you send them to us for free?

The photos you speak of are my livelihood and are for sale if you'd like them. Unless, of course, you give away all of your music for free to anyone who says they like you. If that's the case then you can have them for free. Oh wait, no you can't.
